Exploring transformative pathways in environmental education: Insights from our spring term research and three conferences

As part of the PLANET4B project, this spring semester we began our collaboration
with two schools to explore the transformative potential of school gardens and other
experiential learning methods. Our preliminary findings highlight how these methods
can enhance students; cognitive skills and deepen their connection with nature.
Sharing these results at three international conferences, we emphasized the need for
innovative educational approaches and educational policy reforms to foster a
sustainable future.

One of the top news website in Hungary, Telex, featured our film about the farmer-baker network and the production of high quality, artisan bread on its front page. The film stars Ádám Fülöp, founder of Pipacs Bakery, Ágoston Nobilis, manager of Csoroszlya Farm, Anikó Palikné and Ferenc Palik, farmers-millers and bakers of Szápár Ökofarm and Biomalom, and mill builder Bence Sáfrán.

The YouCount research team, active in Siklósbodony since 2021, presented their methodological findings at the conference titled “Visuality, Action, Participation – Visual Interventions and Participatory Research” on 20 October, 2023 at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest. The conference organisers invited artists, filmmakers, social researchers, and students from different universities in Hungary to provide an overview of the current field of visual social interventions within the social sciences.

In the extraordinary year of 2020, we should have swiftly adapted to countless new things: wearing a mask, creative handshakes, quarantine rules, and quickly shifting work that went entirely onto virtual platforms. The tech industry had poured on us thousands of novel platforms and digital tools – such as Zoom, Miro, Mural, Padlet etc. – which were very useful in managing our projects online but some work-related challenges remained unanswered.

On the 24th of November, Petra Benyei (PhD. in Environmental Sciences at UAB, 2020) was invited by ESSRG’s researchers, Alexandra Czeglédi and Borbála Lipka, to introduce the Spanish citizen science platform called CONECT-e in an internal workshop. Participants from ESSRG and the Hungarian Seed House (Magház), Védegylet and the Hungarian Permaculture Association (MAPER) joined her on Zoom.
