In the COEVOLVERS Project, we developed a series of comic strips in collaboration with a professional illustrator to translate the project’s core, complex theoretical concepts — such as coevolution, affordances, multispecies democracy, and caring with nature— into easy-to-absorb messages.
During the proposal stage, project partners agreed on the importance of creating alternative science communication tools to reach diverse audiences. This is especially crucial for initiatives addressing challenges that require broad societal engagement, such as the biodiversity crisis and climate change.
As the lead for dissemination, exploitation, and communication, ESSRG facilitated the development of these visual narratives, harmonizing researchers’ vision with the illustrator’s creative perspective. Successfully bridging science and sequential art requires an iterative dialogue—one that honors the unique strengths and boundaries of both disciplines.
